MYSTERY BOX STORE
interactive game show installation
Wrexham, 2023/2024.
Self-funded proof of concept.
statement
A fun, free pop-up game show in Wrexham - it’s not exactly the first thing you’d expect when wandering into town on a Saturday morning. But for Robert Corcoran and the 73 Degree Films team, opening the ‘Mystery Box Store’ was a long-time dream come true.
“We wanted to bring some positivity to the City Centre. We hear so much criticism about the amount of empty shops and how everything is now a cafe, barber or charity shop. I thought we should push ourselves to do something totally original, fun and free.”
When the Mystery Box Store opened this time last year, it was an instant hit - with the teaser video quickly amassing over 50,000 views on Instagram, followed by queues of people outside the door on Yorke Street.
To play, visitors to the shop were required to write down a ‘secret’ and post it into a golden box, before spinning a giant wheel of fortune. If the wheel landed on a winner, they could choose a box. Some boxes were good, some were bad and some contained challenges and puzzles to solve to unlock prizes.
